Type 1 Diabetes

Description - Diabetes occurs when sugar gets caught in the blood stream. Instead of getting taken by the cells the blood gets trapped. People with Diabetes often feel tired, thirsty, or frequently urinate. Having to much sugar in the blood can be toxic to certain organs in the body. It can cause many side effects such as kidney failure or blindness. In severe cases it can result in trouble with blood flow, and can result in strokes or needing an amputation. The problem is people with ty pe 1 diabetes, cannot produce any insulin.

Inheritance Pattern - If you or someone in your family has Type 1 diabetes, you may wonder if other family members are at risk. It turns out that Type 1 diabetes does often run in families. In fact, researchers have found nearly 20 different genes that can affect your risk for developing diabetes.

Symptoms - Some of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision.

Treatment/Prognosis - Exercising, taking insulin, eating healthy, and monitoring blood sugar.

Incidence/Frequency - 13,000 People a year.
